CABO POLONIO

SANTA TERESA

REVIEW HISTORICA OF" FORTALEZA DE SANTA TERESA"
1762. - October the Portuguese anticipating a new war with Spain decide to fortify the called point Small Castles, access to the passage of the Narrowness. The Cnel. Tomas Luis Osorio begins the works that are interrupted in 1763 by the advance of the Governor of Buenos Aires, Don Pedro de Cevallos who occupies San Miguel and Santa Teresa.
1763. - The works are continued by the Spaniards, the layout is the one of an irregular pentagon, with five bastions, their perimeter is of 642 meters.
1797. - The Veteran Body of Blandengues of the Border of Montevideo created in December of 1796, uses it as operational base to fulfill its mission to maintain the security and the order in the zone.
1811. - During the Eastern Revolution it is conquered by the Patriotic ones, falls soon in Portuguese hands when these invade the Eastern Band in aid of surrounded Montevideo.
1812. - The Patriotic ones return to recover the strength that is used to control the border with Portugal.
1816-25. - When invading the Portuguese the Eastern Province is under its dominion.
1825-28. - The Liberating Crossed one recovers part of its strategic value when beginning. The Patriotic troops to the control of Colonel Leonardo Olivera at dawn take this fortification from the 31 of December of 1825. 1982. - Museum of historical Site, the exhibition recreates the aspect of a strength of century XVIII and the military evolution of the Spanish domination.

FUERTE SAN MIGUEL  

Fortaleza San MiguelThe Fort of San Miguel, construction of century XVIII initiate by the Spaniards and reconstructed by the Portuguese, yergue between the mountain range with its outstanding pink granite structure. REVIEW HISTORICA OF "FUERTE SAN MIGUEL"

- Las Palmeras

- Sierra de los Pensadores.
It is 20 km from Castillos, on "camino de Indio" and Route 13. Information and Reservations: phone number: 0 474 2125 and 0 470 5004. There are lodging facilities. You will have horse rides, promenades; visits to the aboriginal Museum and "pulperia"


- Palma Sola
It is on Route 15, near Rocha. The Ranch is in Alferez, 28 km from Lascano, 240 km from Montevideo. Information and Reservations: phone number: 916 3011/12/915 7308 (Montevideo). Services: There a straw shed, swimming pool, dairy, horse rides, beach, fishing and the Rocha swamps. Guided journey to Grutas de Salamanca, India Muerta dike and to Cabo Polonio. The sierras of Rocha surround this place. Services offered: walks to the wood, tractor ride, horse rides to the hill and visits to Rocha City. There are sandy brook sides. Rural tasks. - La Barrita

Services: launching Cebollatí River, horseback rides and visits to the rice cultivation areas. Lodging facilities: 5 bedrooms and 3 baths. Full board. Ecologic journeys just for pleasure or to have adventure can be done.

- Rocha Lagoon
It is 5 km from La Paloma. You can get there all through the ocean coast or by route at the intersection of Route 15 and Route 10. The time of the shrimp capture offers an impressing spectacle (that is from the end of February to the end of March). This is a fishing zone, where boating can be performed and different birds can be watched (specially, black neck swans, ducks, gulls, storks and flamingoes).

- Black Lagoon
It is on Route 9, in the opposite side of Santa Teresa entrance.
Barge promenades, with entrance to the "Potrerillo" flora and fauna reserve as well as to the "Don Bosco" vacation colony. Phone number: 0 472 4826 and 3899.

- Castillos Lagoon
The exuberant swamps the abundant birds and land animals in this lagoon surrounded by the impressing woods of "ombúes, tall grass ground and large "ceibo" woods, can be visited through the Valizas Brook, Guardia del Monte Ranch and through the ecologic reserve of Barra Grande. The latter as well as the "ombúes" woods have flora, fauna, stories and habits specialized guides for a better understanding.
- "Ombúes" Woods
These typical American trees form three big groups on the Castillos Lagoon shore. You can enter the Olivera private wood by the bridge over the Valizas Brook on Route 10 and from the opposite point you can enter the Mystery Wood. The third one is on the lagoon northern point, near Castillos and the access is on Route 9, through the Barra Grande ecologic reserve.

- Lagoon Ecologic Reserve (Private)
You will get there from Montevideo, by Route 9 and from Castillos, by Route 16, going 12 km until Aguas Dulces, passing through 2 km of woods and dunes. It is 10 km from Cabo Polonio. It works all the year. Information and Reservations: phone number: 0 475 2118. Cellular phone: 099 602410.
The UNESCO declared this place as the Biosphere Reserve. There are straw roofed cottages for 4 or 6 persons with wood stove, kitchenette, bathrooms with hot water and electrical generator. There are shared rooms and small double rooms. There is a natural lagoon (25 hectares with little sea wolves, capybaras, drop hammers and a great variety of fishes) a spring, a floating inn on the lagoon water over a tender. You will be able to ride horses to visit virgin beaches, to watch fauna (sea wolves, penguins, dolphins, small sharks, "siris", snails, "aves gragata", albatross, gulls, foxes, American ostriches, "aperea", fresh water turtles, ruffed grouses, river plate bird, storks, orange tree birds, black neck swans, country owl, etc) There is a raft, water-tricycles, swift-sailing, fishing competitions, oars, sand board, trekking, journeys to Cabo Polonio and to the Ombues Woods and to SANTA Teresa Fortress, etc. There is a dining room (shrimps, fresh local fish, lamb, breakfast with fruits, honey and beaten eggs). You may have half board or a full board.
