Salto del Penitente

It is located to few km of the city of Minas, in the department of Lavalleja. The singular water jump that hurries in a cascade of more than 20 mts. of height and its 7 access is located to kms. of the city. From there, 17 are crossed kms. by an attractive panoramic route. Once in the Plaza Libertad of Minas, street 25 de Mayo is taken in the direction of the Parque Rodó.

After 16 blocks in the crossing with the street Intendant Medina, one bends to the right. Two blocks advanced more, is connected with route 8, by means of a slight turn towards the left. This route crosses the periphery of the city and to 3 kms. of the departure point a poster senala fín of the urban plant. There the National jurisdiction begins, where the route is high and mighty and improves its state. In km 124 a bridge of 50 is crossed mts. of length. The mountain ranges frame the landscape to both sides of the route. Km advanced more by hand is the right entrance to Salto del Penitente. A winding ballast way of 17 kms. of extension it leads until the jump. Of it must reduce the speed and take advantage of to observe the extensive mountain landscape.

Salto del Penitente To 1.5 Kms. of the entrance, the way turns almost 90 degrees towards the left, being a mount of eucalyptuses by hand right. From there, route 8 of the left side is seen. The mountain ranges of the surroundings with their spotted mantle provide a precious Vista to the traveller. The roadside ditches of the way are ample, deep and with stones. In km 3 of this route, is an important indigenous mount, by hand left. Almost 2 Kms. advanced more, after a pronounced slope, crosses a road of 50 mts. There, there is a little stream surrounded by indigenous mounts and camalotes. Few mts. more ahead the improved road when having smaller stones. By hand right is the hill Cerro Campanero. Soon a road, from which it is possible to be listened to the sound of the birds and crickets, located in the indigenous mount is crossed that surrounds it. To the 200 mts., is a great stone to the right edge of the way. Backwards the important hill is seen Cerro Campanero.

Salto del Penitente The tranquillity of the atmosphere can be felt and a pure and dry air is breathed. Towards the right an extensive indigenous mount is seen, where the Penitente stream runs. By hand left is a stone quarry and something advanced more is located towards the right, a construction of very old stone. In next the 2 kms., two roads are crossed and begins important repecho. From a beautiful mountain Vista can there be appreciated backwards. In km 14,400, a poster indicates to double to the left in the direction of Salto del Penitente and another straight poster points towards water Salto, that is to 2 km of distance. The same poster indicates that, when doubling towards the left it returns to route 8 by a new way. In this point the long walk is begun towards the jump.

When straight continuing, the way is narrower and the fencings are more close. Towards the right a mount of eucalyptuses of 1 km of extension is located and when arriving at a rest, single they are left few meters until the water jump. Stairs are due to descend from concrete, whereas the noise of the water feels clearly. Minutes later the imposing jump is being observed that hurries of a cascade of more than 20 mts. of height. The flowing water individual, is framed in a gorge on rocky bottom and wild vegetation. There, it is possible to be rested and until even bathing in the small lake that conforms waters of the Penitente stream. In order to return, the way is taken from 2300 Kms. in short steep incline that is crossed slowly. After the ascent the poster can be seen that indicates the entrance to the water jump. The way in the direction of route 8, is by hand right now. One is due to double in this sense to take the way from ballast. This Kms has an extension of 10. and fué recently repaired. The passage until the route is winding and in reduction. It is a very pleasant section to cross, by the beautiful landscape that offers the surroundings.
